It all happened before people got all wrapped up in the humanistic technical details of anatomy and perspective and tricks with light and atmospherics. It’s very straightforward, but still amazing and profound. It’s still about the subject, about the story and about trying seriously to depict and grapple with what the artist feels is important in life. It’s not about technique, and not about creating collectible objects for the wealthy. Which is, to a great extent, what painting became shortly thereafter.”
